Ancala is derived from the Gaelic word meaning haven or harbour, which describes our home perfectly. Set above the rocky shoreline just north of the old harbour, looking over the Sound of Sleat to Loch Nevis and the Rough Bounds of Knoydart, our bed and breakfast is a haven from the weariness of travel.
Designed by award winning local architects Dualchas, Ancala provides all the comforts of a modern home. Our bedrooms combine luxury with minimalist design. Super kingsize beds, Egyptian cotton bed linen, en-suite bathrooms with rain showers, and underfloor heating ensure a comfortable stay. But the best feature is the view, with a full room width, floor to ceiling window overlooking the sea.
Ancala is ideally situated a short drive from the ferry terminal at Armadale with frequent car ferries to and from Mallaig. What better way to arrive in Skye than a drive or train journey from Fort William along the famous “Road to the Isles” followed by a twenty minute ferry journey across the Sound of Sleat, watching out for the dolphins, and the occasional whale.
As a base for exploring the south of the island, or for your first or last night on Skye, Ancala is an ideal location. We are beside the Clan Donald Centre at Armadale Castle and Gardens, and a short walk from the local pub and shop. The pub serves lunch and evening meals, and there are also several excellent restaurants within fifteen minutes drive. Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, the Gaelic College of the University of the Highlands and Islands is a two minute drive away, and Torabhaig Distillery is five minutes further.
Your hosts, Jane and Alan Gibson used to own a small Scottish hotel where Alan was the chef. We smoke our own salmon, bake our own bread and pastries, and make our own preserves and some cheeses, so you are ensured a breakfast to remember.
We can only accommodate adults, and do not allow children (including infants) or pets. We are also entirely non-smoking (including vaping) in the house and the accompanying grounds, as it is our home and we are non-smokers.
