Tucked in amongst the historic buildings of Eilean Iarmain are The Gaelic Whiskies and Gaelic Gins of Pràban na Linne Ltd. As well as our Bùth (Shop), we also have a small Gin Distillery where our range of Gaelic Gins are made.
Founded in 1976, by the Scottish entrepreneur Sir Iain Noble, The Gaelic Whiskies were initially developed to provide authentic whisky, of quality, for the connoisseurs of the Gaelic speaking Hebridean Islands of Scotland. The premium range was designed and developed with the names of the whiskies reflecting the rich linguistic and cultural heritage of Scottish Gaelic.
Pràban na Linne is the expression used in Gaelic to describe a “small smugglers’ enterprise on the Sound of Sleat”, and The Gaelic Whiskies’ shop and headquarters are located on the idyllic Sleat peninsula, by the historic stone pier of Eilean Iarmain, with spectacular views overlooking the water of the Sound towards the far hills of mainland Knoydart. The Gaelic Whiskies have gained an international recognition and are widely respected by discerning connoisseurs.
In our small Gin Distillery the traditional copper still, rumoured to be an illicit whisky still, was converted to distil Gaelic Gin and with its cooling worm housed in an old whisky cask, it is identical to the smugglers’ stills of old. With the recent addition of a botanical infusing basket halfway along the copper lyne arm, the illicit whisky still is now perfectly at home distilling Gaelic Gin, legally of course! Influenced by the copper of the still and the softness of the Isle of Skye water, the resulting spirits are exceptional; well rounded, richly aromatic and beautifully balanced.
