Sabhal Mòr Ostaig is the National Centre for Gaelic Language and Culture and is, uniquely, the only centre of Higher and Further Education in the world that provides its learning programmes entirely through the medium of Gaelic in an immersed, language rich learning environment.
Founded in 1973 in old farm steadings at Ostaig in Sleat, Isle of Skye, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2023. From Short Courses for beginners to undergraduate and postgraduate study, both on campus and distance learning, the college attracts students from all over the world with an interest in the Gaelic language, culture and history of Scotland.
Sabhal Mòr Ostaig has continued to expand its course provision and it is now one of the biggest employers in the area, and the biggest employer of Scottish Gaelic speakers in the world.
The national centre also has accommodation, including An Lòchran Penthouse, which can be booked here: smo.uhi.ac.uk/facilities/
